- Copy from the original key when you can. A copy of a copy fits worse each time.
- A key cut to the lock's code fits like the first key did.
- A Do Not Duplicate stamp is a request, not a lock. Restricted keys are what stop copies.
- A plain metal car key with no chip is often 15 to 40 dollars.
- If a new copy sticks, take it back. A good shop recuts it.
What a Copy Costs by Key Type
Thumbtack lists a regular key copy at 1 to 4 dollars and a special key copy at 3 to 20. This Old House says specialty keys like double sided, dimple or master keys cost around 6 dollars each.
A locksmith visit costs more because of the trip. Fixr lists house key duplication at 10 to 25 dollars and a car key copy at 10 to 50.
A plain metal car key with no chip is usually 15 to 40 dollars cut. A chip key has to be programmed too, and usually costs 150 to 300 dollars. See transponder key programming cost and car key replacement cost.
Why Some Copies Stick
A copy carries the wear of the key it was traced from. A copy of a copy picks up that wear again, so each one fits a little worse.
Copy from the original key when you can. If the only key you have is worn, ask a locksmith to cut a key to the lock's code instead. A key cut to code fits like the first key did.
A new copy that sticks or needs jiggling is a bad cut. Take it back to the shop. Most will recut it at no charge.
Keys That Cannot Be Copied Easily
A key stamped Do Not Duplicate is only a request. Some shops honor it and some do not.
Restricted and patented keys are different. The blank is controlled, and only the dealer who holds the records can cut one, usually with a signed card or ID. These cost more, but they are the only keys that truly stop copies. Businesses use them for that reason. See commercial locksmith cost.
If you rent, check your lease before copying a key. Some landlords do not allow it.
Locksmith or Hardware Store
A hardware store is fine for a common house key in good shape. It is the cheapest way.
Go to a locksmith for a worn key, a high security key, a key cut to code, or a car key with a chip. They have the blanks and the machines for those jobs.
If you need many copies after a move or a lost key, a rekey may be the better buy. It makes all the old keys useless. See the rekey cost guide.

One More Thing
Why does my copied key not work
It was likely cut from a worn key or cut badly. Take it back for a recut, or ask a locksmith to cut a key to the lock's code.
Can any key be copied
Most house keys can. Restricted and patented keys can only be cut by the dealer who holds the records. Car keys with chips need programming as well as cutting.
Is it legal to copy a Do Not Duplicate key
The stamp is usually a request, not a law. Many shops still refuse to copy it. If you rent, your lease may have its own rule.
How long does a key copy take
A plain key takes a few minutes. A key cut to code or a high security key can take longer, and a restricted key may need to be ordered.
Can a locksmith make a key without the original
Yes. A locksmith can decode the lock or use its code to cut a new key. It costs more than a copy, but it fits like a new key.
